Overview
Greener Cities asked for a family home that feels industrial on the outside and warm on the inside. We wrapped a simple two-storey volume in larch boards, let a dark steel roof float over the upper floor and opened the living spaces to the garden with full-height glazing and a frameless balcony.
Design Concept
The house is planned as two bars: a closed timber box for bedrooms and a glazed ground floor for living. Where they meet, a double-height hall holds the stair and brings daylight from the roof light deep into the plan.
Materials are kept to a short list – larch, blackened steel, white plaster and oak – so the light does the decorating. Every opening frames a view of the garden or the sky instead of the neighbours.
Features and Amenities
- Floating roof: a 3 m steel cantilever shades the south glazing in summer and lets the low winter sun in.
- Open-tread oak stair: one sculptural piece that links all three levels and carries the lighting.
- Frameless glass balcony: the upper living room opens onto the treetops without a visible railing.
- Low-energy services: heat pump, triple glazing and a planted roof that holds back rainwater.
Solutions
The tight plot left no room for a separate terrace, so the roof does the work: the cantilever shelters an outdoor room on the first floor, and the ground floor slides open onto a garden that runs right up to the kitchen. The result is a compact home of 180 m² that lives like a much larger one.
