Overview
Corten Works needed a headquarters that could hold a workshop, studios and offices on a narrow industrial site. We stacked the three uses and gave the building a single folded skin of anodised aluminium fins that shades the glass and makes the company visible from the ring road.
Design Concept
The fins are set at changing angles, so the facade reads as a moving surface rather than a grid. Behind them, floors are open from wall to wall with a concrete core at one end.
The workshop on the ground floor has a six-metre ceiling and a sliding wall to the yard; the studios above share a double-height break-out space that overlooks it.
Features and Amenities
- Folded fin facade: 1,400 fins in three angles, cut from recycled aluminium.
- Flexible floors: no internal columns, so teams can rearrange the space in a weekend.
- Workshop yard: a covered loading area that doubles as an event space.
- Roof garden: a staff terrace with photovoltaic pergolas.
Solutions
The fins shade 70 % of the summer sun, which let us drop mechanical cooling for the offices. The building is designed for disassembly: the facade, floors and fit-out can be taken apart and reused.
