Overview
The house is a cluster of white cubes arranged around a courtyard and an old pine tree. Small, deep windows keep the rooms cool, while the courtyard side opens completely to the shade.
Design Concept
Each cube holds one part of the day – cooking, living, sleeping – and the courtyard joins them. Walking between rooms means passing through the garden, as in a traditional village house.
Walls are thick, whitewashed masonry; roofs are flat and walkable. The only colour comes from the pine, the sky and the terracotta floor.
Features and Amenities
- Central courtyard: shaded by the existing pine, with a small pool for cooling.
- Deep windows: narrow openings that frame views and keep out the midday sun.
- Walkable roofs: terraces with views over the coast.
- Local materials: stone, lime and terracotta from within 50 km.
Solutions
Keeping the pine tree meant moving the house three metres north and bridging its roots with a raft foundation. The courtyard is now the coolest place on the plot in August.
